Passacaglia is well known as one of Britain's most innovative and entertaining chamber music ensembles, blending the sweet, articulate sound of recorders and baroque flute with the ravishing sonorities of violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord. The members of the group have enjoyed a fruitful and productive partnership for over fifteen years, and have become one of the country’s best loved and most respected early music ensembles. As well as acclaimed performances at the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room, Passacaglia has played at most of the UK's biggest festivals, including the Brighton, York and Beverley Early Music Festivals, Norfolk and Norwich Festival and the Three Choirs Festival. They have visited many music societies and clubs across the British Isles, and toured in Scandinavia, Ireland, America and Europe with internationally respected artists including Dan Laurin, recorders and Julia Gooding, soprano.
As well as many BBC Radio 3 broadcasts, Passacaglia has recorded for Linn Records, Naxos and BCR to a consistently enthusiastic press. Their Boismortier recording was given the full five stars by Classic FM Magazine and hailed as 'an outstanding artistic success' by Music Week Magazine, whilst their interpretation of music by Louis-Antoine Dornel on Naxos was described in the press as ‘A triumph’. Their newest CD A Cheerful Collection
was released on BCR in October 2010, and celebrates the 300th birthday of Thomas Arne, composer of Rule, Britannia!
Passacaglia regularly works with guest artists Dan Laurin (recorders), Julia Gooding (soprano), Christopher Suckling (cello) and Eligio Quinteiro (lutes).
